AVI Student Ambassadors stand outside our offices in Toronto after planting 1,200 Israeli flags in honour of the victims of Oct. 7th

Last night (October 6, 2024), two dozen students, supporters and staff with Allied Voices for Israel (AVI) gathered at our offices in Toronto to plant 1,200 flags in memory of the victims of Oct. 7th. The flags were provided by the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews.

We stood and shared stories of how Oct. 7th impacted us as individuals and as a community and we recited prayers for the hostages, the IDF, and the State of Israel. We planted the flags in honour of those innocents who cruelly lost their lives last year in the most despicable way possible – and in honour of the 101 hostages who remain in Gaza in a nightmarish saga that now enters its second year.

We also planted the flags for us. For Jewish communities across Canada. For the Diaspora, Israel, and the Jewish People. We planted the flags so when Jewish Canadians and our allies drive by that spot today, they will remember they are not alone and that we should be proud of what we as a community have accomplished despite the challenges we face.

It has been a difficult year for the Jewish People but we will never back down from standing for Am Yisrael, human rights, and common sense.

I would like to thank MPP Michael Kerzner for joining us and sharing a few words about the power of our community. I would also like to recognize the The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews for sponsoring the flags! We couldn't have done this without your support.

Am Yisrael Chai and BRING THEM HOME NOW. 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱

In honour of Oct. 7th, AVI Student Ambassadors from campuses across Canada have shared how the tragedy has affected them, especially as students on campus.

Students from the University of Montreal, University of Ottawa, University of British Columbia, and Trent University participated in the campaign, most of them non-Jewish allies who are standing with their friends in the Jewish community.

Today, as we mark one year since the horrific events of October 7th, 2023 our students are taking part in tributes, vigils, and commemorations at a dozen university campuses across Canada, including McGill University, University of British Columbia, McMaster University, OCAD University, Concordia University, York University, Western University, and others.

Please join us as we gather in solidarity, remembrance, and hope.

Finally, for those of you in Toronto, we hope to see you at the Oct. 7th vigil tonight hosted by UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. Many of our students and staff will be in attendance as we mourn the 1,200 lives lost and stand in solidarity with the hostages who have not yet returned home.

Sending love and strength to each and every one of you on this dark and difficult day in Jewish history.
