Common Ground Ambassadors Lotan Wider and Elianna Perlmutter take action after newly elected York Federation of Students President openly glorified terrorism

Common Ground Ambassadors Lotan Wider and Elianna Perlmutter were quoted in a front page National Post story on Wednesday, Feb. 26

We at Allied Voices for Israel (AVI) are incredibly proud of two of our Common Ground Ambassadors at York University, Lotan Wider and Elianna Perlmutter, who were quoted in a front page expose in the National Post today, York University student president urged to resign over 'deeply concerning' support for Hamas.

The students detailed their experiences on campus after the York Federation of Students elected Somar Abuaziza as its new President. Abuaziza has openly glorified terrorism and celebrated the Oct. 7th attacks on several occasions.

For example, following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, she made an Instagram post that said, “Lived a hero and died a hero.”

AVI Founder and Executive Director Daniel Koren was also featured in the story, saying that the university's response to the situation has been a “stain on York's reputation.”

Wider even submitted a complaint to York claiming that Abuaziza’s public statements violated the Code of Student Rights & Responsibilities, specifically guidelines on workplace violence prevention, human rights and disruptive or harassing behaviour. He requested that she be expelled so that other students would not follow her example.

“When a student openly celebrates terrorist attacks and poses with weapons while praising violence against Jews, it sends a dangerous message that such hatred is acceptable within York’s academic community,” Wider wrote in his complaint that was shared with the Post.

While York agreed with him that Abuaziza did not “uphold an atmosphere of civility, honesty, equity and respect for others,” the reprimand issued to her was a “slap on the wrist,” according to Wider.

Meanwhile, Perlmutter told the Post, “I think it’s particularly scary and harrowing that York University allows an individual who has expressed support for terrorist organizations to even be allowed on campus.”

AVI was also quoted in a Globe and Mail article published this week about the life and times of B'nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn z"l, beautifully written by our friend Dave Gordon.

Please note: In honour of Ariel, Kfir, Shiri, and Yarden Bibas, AVI has changed its main branding colour to orange. Our hearts and prayers are with the entire Bibas Family.
