Here at home, our work as Allied Voices for Israel (AVI) continues unabated. At the University of Victoria, one of our brave AVI Student Ambassadors shared a raw and powerful statement about the anti-Jewish hatred they have faced on campus these last two years.

“I have received hateful, racist, and exclusionary treatment these past two years on the basis of my ethnicity, and my experiences range from silence to being silenced,” they write.

“Dozens of friends, some of which have known me intimately for years, and some only for days, cut off all contact with me in response to my public outcry against the biggest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”

Over the last week, our AVI Student Ambassadors on campuses across Canada gathered to commemorate two years and 1,200 lives lost. We are proud of their respective initiatives to remember a day two years ago that changed all of us forever.

University of Calgary's sukkah!

Ringing in the Jewish holiday of Sukkot was very meaningful with our University of Calgary and Mount Royal University students and in partnership with Chabad of Alberta, StandWithUs Canada, and Hillel Calgary.

Students shook the four species (a Sukkot custom symbolizing unity amongst Jews of different backgrounds and levels of observance) and ate some delicious bites in the sukkah with Alberta Campus Advisor & Advocacy Associate, Jean-Luc Mudingayi.

Queen's University students Conrad and Jonathan at Kingston's annual Sukkah in the Square

Our wonderful Queen's University Student Ambassadors and alumni represented AVI at Sukkah in the Square in Kingston, Ontario's annual multi-day celebration of Sukkot!

In Montreal, we partnered with Chabad of Concordia and AEPI on a mobile sukkah initiative, where we got McGill and Concordia students to partake in the Sukkot mitzvah (commandment) of shaking the four species, and handed out prayers and shabbat candles in the merit of the hostages coming home.
