Applications for our Common Roots Ambassadorship for high school students are open, and the early bird deadline is fast approaching!
We offer a wide range of ways for Grade 8-12 students of all backgrounds across Canada to get involved, from social media campaigns and writing op-eds, to creating events and workshops, volunteer opportunities, and so much more!
We are excited to announce that we will be taking our next cohort of high school students on a trip to Houston, Texas, for an immersive exploration of coalition-building and advocacy.
As one of the most diverse cities in the United States, Houston offers a unique opportunity to hear from inspiring Jewish communal leaders, advocates, and interfaith partners who are building meaningful relationships and creating positive change within their communities.

Through engaging workshops, dynamic conversations, and hands-on learning, students will strengthen their advocacy and leadership skills, learn effective strategies for community engagement and storytelling, and connect with peers from across Canada.
Together, participants will explore how collaboration, allyship, and shared values can help create lasting impact while exploring Houston’s history and culture, enjoying exciting activities, and building friendships that will last a lifetime.
If you're looking for a community that feels like home and a program that pushes you to grow and learn, you just found it.

Our Common Roots Ambassadors go on to become incredible leaders and advocates for human rights in their classrooms and beyond! Many also join AVI as Common Ground Ambassadors once they get to their university campus.
Our Common Roots Alumna Naomi recently wrote a thoughtful blog post outlining the importance of community involvement and the value of actually building building positive Jewish experiences as opposed to simply identifying as Jewish.
Having grown up in a small yet tight knit community in London, Ontario, Naomi herself can attest to the power of community solidarity in affirming one's Jewish pride.
“In my community in London, Ontario, we have a city of 500,000 people and a Jewish community of 3,000 people. We have a limited number of hired professionals to run children’s programs, lead services, or cook the food that brings people out to events,” writes Naomi.
“As a teen, I can tell you that the lack of people my age can create a small social bubble. However, in smaller communities we have one big advantage: we get to build Jewish experiences, not just attend them.”
