On July 17th, 2024, AVI/HonestReporting Canada Campus Media Fellow and Concordia University Journalism student Ora Bar for getting published in The Suburban.
In her piece, “Canada has a sickness: Academic institutions are the epicentre,” Ora comments on the blatantly anti-Israel and anti-Jewish bias that exists in Canadian journalism today, drawing from her own experiences as a Journalism student and vocal Israel Advocate.
A particular example of antisemitic bias can be seen through Ora’s close encounters with The Link - a Concordia student-run publication; “what they promote as a credible student news platform, has become a breeding ground of antisemitic rhetoric fetishizing the Israel-Palestine conflict,” writes Ora.
“Through The Link’s and other news organizations’ work, a reality where antisemitism does not exist is created while repainting its perpetuation as status quo justice. Their narrative creates a simplistic world where the Jews are by default oppressors who are never the victims of targeted hate, ignoring reality. Through coded words and choices of truths, they suggest Palestinian well-being should only be achieved at the expense of Israelis.”
